In 2008, a company called Vex Robotics created a physical robotics platform called Vex. The following year, they released a software called Vexcode, which allowed users to program their robots using a block-based coding language. In 2017, they released a new version of the software called Vexcode VR, which allows users to code and compete in simulated robot challenges in a virtual environment. What is vexcode? It’s a combination of three words: vex (a synonym for complicated), code (software) and competition (or comp). You may also know it as an acronym: Virtual Environment eXploration Code Competition. How does it all work?

You can play each challenge multiple times, trying out different approaches and strategies until you find the best solution.  For example, the challenge might ask you to get the robot to turn off an alarm within a certain time limit. The first thing you'll want to do is create a loop so that the alarm never turns off while waiting for input. After that, it's just about programming your robots movements with conditional logic statements so they move in the right direction and perform certain actions along the way. The more challenges you win, the higher your ranking becomes!

Competition, Challenges & Prizes

With Vexcode VR, you can code and compete in simulated robot challenges against other players from around the world. Plus, there are built-in competitions with real-world prizes that you can participate in. And if you're feeling really competitive, you can create your own custom challenges to share with others. You also have full control over your avatar's look and feel: select a body type, choose an outfit, design a logo for your team, etc. In addition to coding the actions of their robots, participants will also need to solve problems strategically. 

How does a player earn points?

 Points are earned by completing missions within 3 minutes. There is one point awarded for each mission completed successfully - but be warned: some missions take more time than others! The total number of points given at the end of a match depend on how many missions were attempted, as well as whether or not they were completed successfully. Points are assigned as follows:

  • 1 point for finishing a mission 
  • 2 points for finishing 2 or more missions (2nd mission must be started before the first has been finished) 
  • 5 points for finishing all 4 missions 
  • 8 points for finishing all 4 missions under 2 minutes 
  • 10 points for finishing all 4 missions under 1 minute 30 seconds.

Prizes range from $50 Amazon gift cards to $1000 gift cards to Shapeways. 

Prizes include T-shirts, sunglasses, and build kits.
